What is Accessible Housing?

Beyond wheelchair ramps and railings, modifications to a home allows people with disability to live more independently and feel safer and happier in their home. Every person’s needs will be as unique as them so hopefully after reading this blog you can better understand the importance of accessible housing and how it helps people with disabilities make a house into a home! Family Care Australia provides home modifications to make sure that every nook and cranny is accessible and that our participants are 100% happy and satisfied.

Why is it important?

People with disabilities can often find it hard to be in spaces that simply don’t allow them to live independently or access certain parts of the house with ease. Everyone deserves a place to live where they can live comfortably, independently and feel at home. Accessible housing allows people with disabilities to live an independent life, where they can do day-to-day activities without barriers, and more importantly accessible housing can be an effective way to reduce accidents and injuries around the household. Having a more accessible home can lead to accelerated development of life skills and independence, a Safer home reducing accidents and can help people with disabilities feel happier, improving their mental state.

Shortage of Accommodation

There has always been a shortage of accommodation for those with disabilities, with a needed rise of 60% in disability friendly housing to accommodate for expected SDA participants. The lack of disability friendly housing is often due to a neglect to accessible housing in both construction and by local councils nationwide. And with a waiting list for public housing that is ever growing, people with disabilities are finding it harder to find accessible housing, although there have been some strides in the right direction such as the National Construction Code adopted accessibility regulations but these weren’t made mandatory. This is where Accessible Housing Modifications help those who are struggling to find an affordable place to live, it allows participants to have a house which doesn’t hold back their lives and allows them to live as independently as possible.
